Drawing alongside, the English asked the French to move a boat so they could manoeuver, which the French did. The English then asked the French to raise a white flag, then attacked as soon as the French captain refused. Completely unprepared for the hail of musket fire, many of the French crew threw themselves overboard, only to be chased and shot in the water by the English sailors. The citizens of Genoa were outraged by this breach of neutrality. Published in the 'Collection complète des tableaux historiques de la révolution française'.
