Rare engraving, 270 x 375mm. 10½ x 14½".
Scene at Southampton, with the Isle of Wight faintly visible in the background. In the foreground a man stands with crutches to support his gouty foot is followed by a woman carrying a bottle labelled 'Hartshorn'. Nearer the shore are several figures, one of whom is labelled 'The Rabbit Doctor', and who carries a large rabbit under his arm. 'This is St. André (1680-1776), an unqualified but fashionable surgeon who investigated the case of Mary Tofts in 1726, who professed to be delivered of rabbits [...] He vouched for her story in all its impossible details. In spite of the scandal caused by its exposure he eloped with, and afterwards married, Lady Elizabeth Molyneux on the night of the death of her husband whom he had been professionally attending. They settled in Southampton about 1750' (Stevens and George). This episode was also depicted by William Hogarth in his engraving 'Cunicularii, or the Wise Men of Goodliman in Consultation'. 25 plates from one of the rarest of eighteenth century drawing books, containing 30 vedute after Italian artist Andrea Locatelli (1695-1741), etched by William Austin (1721-1820). Austin was a pupil of George Bickham and worked with Paul Sandby and Francis Vivares. He ran a print-shop publishing some political caricatures, anti-French and pro-Fox, but gave up print making for teaching drawing, first in London and afterwards in Brighton. The title (as above) comes from the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Yale Center for British Art has a pirated version, 'exemplified in thirty-eight etchings', published by T. Engraving, sheet 255 x 360mm (10 x 14¼"). Trimmed.
Two 'cubs' (ie sons of Henry Fox, first Baron Holland of Foxley) ride on horseback. The figure on the right, stood on an ass which refuses to cross the stream, is probably intended for Charles James Fox, while the figure on the left, jeering while crossing the stream, is probably Henry Fox, a keen horserider in his youth. Henry Fox, in the military academy in Strasbourg at this time, was stationed in Boston the following year and participated in the early battles of the American War of Independence. First in a set of twelve prints by William Austin (1721/33-1820), drawing-master and engraver. Austin taught caricature to amateurs and this series, which mocked several well-known personages (as did its dedicatee, the actor Samuel Foote) contains some of the most lively English caricatures of the period between Hogarth and the late Georgian satire of Gillray and Rowlandson.

Behind is a haystack, on the top of which are two other Spaniards, much alarmed at the approach of a countryman who threatens them with his pitch-fork. A man and woman, both wearing coats with military facings, watch the scene; she points, he looks through a small telescope. In the foreground a sow and three young pigs are galloping.

A view of Virginia Water, with sheep and goats and a man filling a barrel with water from the lake. Thomas Sandby had been private secretary and draughtsman to Cumberland since 1743, and when Cumberland was appointed Ranger Thomas was made his deputy. While Thomas laid out improvements to the Park, including the creation of Virginia Water from a stream, he drew these eight scenes. The series was reissued by Boydell in 1772 with his address added.
