A satire at a restaurant; the waiter apologising to the client that he had forgotten the wine at 20 frances more! It forms part of an 1838 series of lithographs devised by Bouchot for "Le Charivari" under the thematic title of "Erreurs". From 'Le Charivari', the illustrated newspaper published in Paris, from 1832 to 1937. After 1835, when the government banned political caricature, Le Charivari began publishing satires of everyday life.

Julie Dorus-Gras (1805 - 1896) was a Belgian operatic soprano. To begin her career she made a concert tour which took her to Brussels. Her concert was so successful, that Count de Liederkerke offered her a contract to sing operatic roles. Dorus acquired the name Gras on 19th April 1833, when she married one of the leading violinists in the orchestra of the Paris Opera. From a series of portraits published in 1838-43 by Aubert & co.

Cornélie Falcon (1814 - 1897) was a French soprano who sang at the Opéra in Paris. Her greatest success was creating the role of Valentine in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots. She and the tenor Adolphe Nourrit are credited with being primarily responsible for raising artistic standards at the Opéra, and the roles in which she excelled came to be known as 'falcon soprano' parts. Four comic scenes of Paris in the summer; A crowd gathering to depart on a coach,' D'epart pour une petite partie de campagne,' a woman with a huge hat carrying a parasol, 'Une dame qui veut se conserver le teint,' a woman in a hot air balloon, 'M.lle Garnerin repondant aux acclamations d'un public idolatre,' and a man in hunting gear stalking in an unsuitable enviroment, 'Etudes de chasse avant l'ouverture.' Elisa Garnerin (1791-1853) was a French balloonist and parachutist. She was the niece of the pioneer parachutist André-Jacques Garnerin, and took advantage of his name and of the novelty of a woman performing what were at the time extremely daring feats.

Social satire: two French army veterans of the Battle of Isly (August 14, 1844) commiserate over a bottle of wine, one man complaining that the only booty captured by the French army was an umbrella and some pipes. The uniforms suggest that the man on the left is artillery, his comrade across the table infantry. The Battle of Isly was fought between France and Morocco near Oujda, Morocco. The French Marshal Bugeaud, who recovered the Moroccan commander's tent and umbrella (equivalent to capturing a military standard in European warfare), was made Duke of Isly for his victory. Teresa Milanollo (1827-1904) as a teenager, holding a violin. She and her sister Maria (1832-1848) were child prodigy violinists from Savigliano. They came to England in 1845 in the course of an extensive European tour, after which a piece of music they played ('Milanollo' by German composer Johann Valentin Hamm) was adopted as a regimental march by both the Coldstream Guards and Life Guards.
