Walter Scott [facsimile signature.]
Etched by W Mayor after a Sketch by Edwin Landseer [facsimile.]
[n.d. c.1880]
Etching vignette. Imitation of a pen sketch. Plate 223 x 173mm. 8¾ x 6¾" Some patched tears, some rubbing and scuffing.
Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet (14 August 1771–21 September 1832) was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. In some ways Scott was the first author to have a truly international career in his lifetime, with many contemporary readers all over Great Britain, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and North America. His novels and (to a lesser extent) his poetry are still read, but he is far less popular nowadays than he was at the height of his fame. Nevertheless many of his works remain classics of English literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley and The Heart of Midlothian.

[London: E. Gambart & Co., c.1860.] [Publisher's blindstamp to lower margin.]
Etching on india paper, proof?, 225 x 295mm. 9 x 11½". A full sheet impression.
The character of the animal and its lugubrious expression is expertly captured. Sir Edwin Landseer (1802 - 1873) was the most famous animal painter of the period. He was trained by his father to sketch animals from life, and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy when only 13. Emotive portraits of animals went down very well with the Victorian public, crossing the class divide. Queen Victoria had Landseer paint her pets, while the middle classes bought prints of his work to hang at home.

His performances were admired also in London, where Queen Victoria saw them about at least six times. Here he is seen inside a cage with a lion, lioness and leopard to his left, and on his right a tiger and jaguar; he holds a whip in his hand. The lion has raised himself against the bars of the cage, with his huge mouth wide open.
