The chryselephantine statue of Zeus, sculpted by Phidias for the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it was destroyed during the fifth century AD. The descriptive text, in German & French, tells that Erlach based this image on the description of Pausanias, the Greek traveller of the 2nd century AD, who descriptions of classical sites have frequently been authenticated by modern archaeologists. This plate was published in Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's 'Entwürst Einer Historischen Architectur', a study of the architecture of the ancient world.
