Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) the English writer, journalist and pampleteer, best known for his 'Robinson Crusoe' of 1719. This plate was the frontispiece to his 'Jure Divino' of 1706.

I. Taverner pinx: I Smith fec: [British, n.d., c.1690.] Mezzotint, rare, 280 x 220mm. 11 x 8¾". Portrait of William Woodward (d.1692), Nonconformist Minister at Leominster; long white hair, wearing cap and black coat with wide sleeves. Previously Woodward was a tutor at Christ Church, and vicar of Whitchurch, in the diocese of Hereford; but he was ejected, and travelled to Turkey, after which he left the Anglican Church and became a nonconformist.
