Joseph Rogers (Guzeppi Ruggier) was a Maltese seaman who was instrumental in saving many lives when the 'Royal Charter' was shipwrecked on the coast of Anglesey and unreachable due to atrocious conditons. Rogers offered to swim from the vessel to shore with rope, and succeeded in reaching the rocks. A lifeline was set up to save as many of the passengers and crew, but the force of the storm crashed down on the ship and only thirty-nine lives were saved out of the possible four hundred that were recorded.
