Southgate's July 1831 catalogue no. 275, of copper printing plates, plate books and print sets, formerly the property of William Daniell (1769 - 1837), landscape painter and engraver. Among the printing plates for sale were those for his 'A Voyage round Great Britain', 'Views of London', 'The London Docks', Samuel Daniell's 'African Scenery', George Dance's portraits of 'eminent characters', 'Windsor Castle', 'Ceylon' and 'Prince of Wales Island'. The 'Voyage Round Great Britain' plates are now in the Tate Gallery: Iain Bain’s account of their history (William Daniell; a voyage…an exhibition, 1979) does not mention this sale and states 'as yet it has not been possible to arrive at an exact account of their survival'. He states that by the 1850s the plates were owned by the publisher Henry G. Bohn (also owner of the Gillray caricature plates) and subsequent owners include Armand Maurice and Putnam's, before The Bodley Head sold the plates to the Tate Gallery Publications Department in 1972. Southgate specialised in trade remainder sales; his catalogues are generally very uncommon. Certainly we have been unable to trace another example of this catalogue.
