In 1752 Charles White (1696 - 1776), along with Joseph Bancroft, a merchant, was instrumental in founding Manchester Infirmary. This was the first hospital in the area. The premises were a house in Garden Street but a new, purpose-built, hospital was opened overlooking what is now Piccadilly Gardens in 1756. White was a surgeon at the infirmary for 28 years. Atmospheric street scene. After John Ralston (1789 - 1833) a little known Manchester-based artist. Some of the best pictorial records of late 18th and early 19th century Manchester rely on drawings made by Ralston, including his many studies of Market Sted Lane (now Market Street).
