A group of cherubs, two embracing, one holding a fruit, others behind catching butterflies, another leaning over a basket of fruit. Etched by Captain William Baillie (1723-1810). Having retired from the army in 1761 he devoted himself to printmaking and dealing, specialising in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques.

Baillie retired from the army in 1761 with the rank of Captain and thereafter devoted himself to printmaking and dealing. He specialised in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques.

A classical setting, with mourning figures surrounding a dying man lying in a bed. At the centre, the priest is leaning over the dying man and touching his hand. After one of the 'Seven Sacraments' by the French painter Nicholas Poussin (1594 - 1665) painted between 1637 and 1640.

Hercules as a young man, visited by the figures of Vice and Virtue, who offer him the choice between a pleasant and easy life or a severe but glorious life. Hercules, of course, chose the latter. From a collected edition of the engravings by Sir Robert Strange (1721-92) after famous paintings, in this case one by Poussin, c.1636, owned by Henry Hoare (1705-85), a banker and patron of art, who built Stourhead in Wiltshire, where it still resides.

Moses striking the rock with his staff, creating a miraculous spring from which people rush to gather water and drink. The 1649 painting by Nicolas Poussin, then in the collection at Houghton, was regarded as one of his finest. Like most of the Houghton Collection, it was purchased by Catherine the Great where it forms part of the collection of the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg.

Biblical scene after Nicolas Poussin (1594 - 1665) that depicts Noah standing before an altar, above which God has appeared; around him, seven figures praying. The painting after which this was engraved is now housed in the Drawing Room at Tatton Park, Cheshire.

Pan chasing Syrinx on a reed-fringed river bank. Two river nymphs are visible in the foreground on the right. In continuation of the legend; she asked for their assistance and they transformed her into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of panpipes, named syrinx after her.

A fine image Venus and Adonis lie sleeping in an embrace while cherubs play with bows and arrows and catch a hare. Based on Ovid's story in Metamorphoses, Book 10 which tells of how Venus took the young Adonis as her lover and tries to persuade him not to hunt fearing for his safety, Adonis however, ignores her warning and is killed by a boar. From the series 'The Most Capital Paintings in England', Boydell's first major initiative as a pioneering publisher of fine engravings.
