A poultry shop, displaying turkeys, geese, ducks, and, oddly, pigs and rabbits. One of a rare set of four London markets.

A semi-satirical view, with a horse race in progress, but showing the chaos of the spectators' coaches, with people being knocked over and falling off their horses. Bottom left scammers are running the three cup ball trick.

One of three plates by James Pollard illustrating William Cowper's poem 'The Diverting History of John Gilpin', a ballad about the misadventures of a linen draper on his wedding anniversary first published anonymously in 1782, which became the most popular poem of the decade. Pollard (1792-1867) was a coaching and sporting artist and the son of engraver and publisher Robert Pollard (1755/6-1839). After establishing himself in the 1820s James Pollard worked for leading print publishers and painted private commissions as well as working for the family firm. His works encompass racing, steeplechasing, hunting, shooting and fishing, and to a lesser extent various other sports.

Many figures on the street are watching and running towards the scene, with several more watching from the windows above shops; 'Corn Dealer and Hay Salesman', 'Haberdasher and Silk Mercer' and 'Cabinet Maker, Upholster and Undertaker'. The fire engines are inscribed, from left to right, 'County Fire Office, [Reg]ent Street', 'Westminster Fire Office, Established 1717, King Street Covent Garden', and 'Phoenix Fire Office, Lombard Street & Charing Cross'.

Fine & rare aquatint, proof before all letters, printed in colours and finished with exceptional hand colour. 335 x 445mm (13¼ x 17½"). Framed in a "fancy" Daniell frame.
A superb example of this coaching print, depicting a mail coach pushing through a flood. A measuring pole shows the depth of the water to be 2½ feet. One of a set of four plates of coaches in bad weather by James Pollard (1792-1867).
