A three quarter length portrait of American naval officer, John Paul Jones (1747 - 1792), on the deck of a ship during a battle. The hole of a cannon-ball in the side of the ship can be seen in front of him. Jones is smiling and looking to right, reaching with his left hand across himself to one of a number of pistols in his belt, with his sword in his right hand. Jones was a naval officer in service of United States, famous for exploits in British waters during the War of Independence
