The scene is the 1886 VRC Derby with the winner, Trident, in the winner’s enclosure with the winning post in the background. There are over 70 portraits including the painter of the picture, Carl Kahler (he stands on the right looking down with his hands in his pockets). A fascinating social study and an important Australian racing print at the city's Flemington course in November. Kahler (1856-1906) was an Austrian who arrived in Melbourne in 1885 and became a portrait-painter. He is best known for his three paintings of Flemington which hang in the Committee Room of the Victorian Racing Club.
