Very scarce mezzotint, platemark 385 x 280mm (15¼ x 11"). Very slight creasing and time stained.
Fine mezzotint of the Irish artist Nathaniel Hone's (1718-84) portrait of his son Horace, as the shepherd David, which was first exhibited to acclaim at the Royal Academy in 1771. Horace Hone himself became a notable miniaturist, who found employment at the court of George IV.

Sir John Fielding (1721-1780), English magistrate and social reformer, leaning on a book titled 'The Law' on the spine crushing a serpent. Despite being blinded in a navy accident aged 19, Fielding set up his own business and, in his spare time, studied law. He worked very closely with his half-brother Henry Fielding (a chief magistrate as well as a novelist), creating the first professional police force, the Bow Street Runners. Known as the "Blind Beak", he could allegedly recognise three thousand criminals by the sounds of their voices.

Three quarter seated portrait of Sir John Fielding (1721-1780), English magistrate and social reformer. He rests his left hand on the 'Holy Bible' and 'Statuits at Large Magna Charta' and his right holds a rolled document labelled 'Plan of' on his knee. He wears a dark coat with narrow embroidered trim along edge and cuffs, over an embroidered waistcoat and a narrow dark band just above his closed eyes. Oval portrait of Benjamin Hoadly (1676-1761), appointed as the George I's chaplain and Bishop of Bangor in 1715, Salisbury in 1723 and finally Winchester in 1734. He is best known for speaking on behalf of the king in the 'Bangorian Controversy', arguing that there was no Biblical justification for any church government, an attack on the bishops sitting in the House of Lords. His portrait was more famously painted by William Hogarth; Hoadly's son Benjamin helped Hogarth on his 'Analysis of Beauty', 1753.

He specialised in imitating old-master drawings and prints, using a variety of printmaking techniques.
