Stipple, with large margins. Plate 178 x 114mm. 7 x 4½".
Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805). As one of the leading British generals in the American War of Independence, his surrender at the Siege of Yorktown (1781) effectively ended hostilities in North America. He later became Governor-General of India (1786-1793), and won renown for his reforming administration. He established the Cornwallis (or Bengal) code for stamping out corruption and pioneered a more professional, salaried civil service. His improvements had valuable long-term consequences for the effective government of India. Later, as Master of the Ordnance he played a key role in overseeing what is now the Ordnance Survey.
