The Dauntless was commanded by James Gordon Bennett Jr. (1841 - 1918), publisher of the New York Herald and the youngest Commodore ever of the New York Yacht Club. [Unidentified ship, previously thought to be the 'Coonatto']
TGD [artist's monogram T. G. Dutton] 506.
[London, William Foster, 15th July 1863.]
Tinted lithograph with hand colour, proof before letters. Image 405 x 595mm (16 x 23¼").
The Coonatto, a three-masted ship of 633 tons, built in London by Thomas Bilbé in 1863. Used as an Australian wool clipper, the name is an Aboriginal word for a food-bearing tree. In 1876 the Coonatto ran aground on rocks under the Seven Sisters in Sussex, where some of her iron remains can still be seen at low tide. Her captain, Captain Hillman, had his certificate suspended for three months for negligence, although there was speculation he wrecked the Coonatto for insurance money. However as his next ship, the 'Inch Kenneth' foundered the following year, killing Hillman, it would seem he was just inept.

The "Little Lucy", Steel Screw Steamer. Successful Voyage of a Steel Screw Steamer - (From the Engineer, August 27, 1859.)
T. G. Dutton, del.t et lith. Day & Son, Lith.rs to the Queen.
[n.d., c.1859.]
Tinted lithograph with large margins. Extremely rare. Sheet size: 400 x 515mm (15¾ x 20¼"). Creasing, some foxing. Loss to margins top left.
The 'Little Lucy', built in 1858 in Stockton, by Richardson, Duck & Co. was Teeside's first steel ship. It was built for river service in the Brazils, travelling from England to Bahia after it was originally due to be sent in loose plates and constructed on arrival. It was decided to test 'Little Lucy', sailing to Falmouth from the Tees before embarking across the Atlantic under sail and steam, to South America. The severe weather the ship successfully endured on this test trip proved that for such a small ship, she was a 'good and safe sea boat'. An explanation of the ship's construction and voyage is printed below the title.

The Mooltan was registered for P & O on Mar.8th 1861. Designed as P & Os most luxurious vessel to date, she was expensively decorated throughout. Her engines were the company's first compound type and were designed to cut the consumption of coal by half. To assist in maintaining a reliable service speed, she was designed with a narrow beam, but this produced severe rolling in a cross sea and she was never a successful ship. Her maiden voyage started 20th Jul.1861 when she left Southampton for Alexandria and she was later transferred to the Calcutta to Suez route (this was before the opening of the Suez Canal when UK - India passages were covered in two parts).
