Etching by history painter Charles West Cope (1811-90), widely regarded as the finest of his prints. Cope is primarily remembered for his frescoes in the House of Lords and the peers' corridor, but in addition to his academic renderings of historical and literary subjects, he was a talented printmaker. He was a founder member of the Etching Club (whose members also included Samuel Palmer), whose 1857 portfolio this formed part of. A related drawing is in the British Museum.
