Illustration to the narrative poem 'Tam O' Shanter' by Robert Burns, which describes a disturbing vision experienced by Tam on his way home from an inn. The composition of Tam on horseback, pursued by witches, has been painted by several artists. Eugene Delacroix painted the scene in 1849, and his painting bears some resembalance to the compostion of this mezzotint.
