He was made the first director of the future Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées in 1747, ennobled and appointed Knight of the Order of the Saint-Esprit in 1763. He is perhaps best known for the bridges he built, especially the Louis XVI bridge (future Concorde bridge) finished in 1791.
