Brughel pinxit W. Hollar fecit, ex Collectione Arundeliana 1650
Etching, sheet 115 x 170mm (4½x 6¾"). Trimmed.
Landscape after Jan Brueghel the Elder, etched by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77), Bohemian printmaker who spent most of his career working in England after meeting Thomas Howard, second earl of Arundel, in Cologne in 1636. After travelling with Arundel on the continent for several months, Hollar returned with him to England, took up lodgings in Arundel House, and married a servant of the countess of Arundel. It was intended that Hollar should reproduce paintings and drawings belonging to the count and countess, but the project foundered. This etching is one of only a small number of prints that the generally prolific Hollar produced from works in the Arundel collection.
