Jozef Brandt pinx z. Warszawy. Wilh. Rohr sculpt. Konigsberg i. Pr. ['Wilh. Rohr' pencil signature.]
[German or French, n.d., c.1880.]
Very rare engraving on india paper, signed engraver's proof before title. India 415 x 740mm, 16¼ x 29¼". Lacking margin outside india on three sides. Pencil annotations to lower margin.
Warriors on horseback singing as they cross the plains of Ukraine or southern Russia. Those in front are playing a banjo-type instrument; another with a tambourine and a pipe or flute. Lances and banners are holstered in the horses' saddles. A typical subject for Józef Brandt (Polish, 1841 - 1915), who painted mainly Polish historical and battle scenes. He trained in Paris and Munich, and lived in Munich from 1863 where he had a studio.
