[After Fernando Brambila.]
[n.d., c.1795.] Later 19th century.
Aquatint, very scarce. 290 x 490mm (11½ x 19¼").
A view from the scientific voyage of Alessandro Malaspina, 1789-1794, showing the two corvettes Descubierta and Atrevida (named in honour of Cook's ships Discovery and Resolution) at anchor at Vava?u in Tonga. After five years at sea Malaspina returned home in 1794 and found the political situation of Spain not to his liking; he joined a conspiracy against the Prime Minister Godoy resulting in his imprisonment in 1796 and exile after his release in 1802. His seven-volume account of his expedition was suppressed and remained unpublished until the late 19th century.
