George Washington (1732-99), American statesman and soldier who served as the first President of the United States (1789-97). This French engraving emphasizes Washington's close friendship with Lafayette (1757-1834), the French aristocrat and military officer who fought alongside him in the American Revolutionary War. It is based on a detail from the 1779 portrait of Washington at the Battle of Princeton by Charles Willson Peale (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts).
