Mauzaisse. 1825. Lithog. de C.Motte.
[c.1825.]
Lithograph. Printed area 295 x 250mm, 11½ x 9¾". Publisher's blind stamp under title. Cut.
Head and shoulders portrait of Ali Pasha (1740-1822), the Ottoman Albanian ruler, surnamed Aslan, 'the Lion', or the 'Lion of Yannina', who fought for independence from the Ottoman Empire. His cruelty has become legendary. Byron visited Ali's court in Ioánnina in 1809 and wrote to his mother: 'His Highness is a remorseless tyrant, guilty of the most horrible cruelties, very brave, so good a general that they call him the Mahometan Buonaparte ... but as barbarous as he is successful, roasting rebels, etc, etc.'. Jean-Baptiste Mauzaisse (1784-1844) appears to have painted this portrait after Ali's death.

Guth 98 [engraved in image.]
Octr. 6th. 1898. Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd. Lith.

Eugène Henri Brisson (1835-1912) was a French statesman, Prime Minister of France for a period in 1885 until 1886 and again in 1898. He was a member of the extreme Left, he did however propose amnesty for the condemned but it was voted down. He was also a prominent figure in exposing the Panama scandals. In June of 1898 he formed a cabinet when the country was violently excited over the Dreyfus affair. The Dreyfus affair was a political scandal that divided France in the 1890s and the early 1900s. It involved the conviction for treason of Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a French artillery officer of Alsatian Jewish descent, who was sentenced to life for allegedly having communicated French military secrets to the German Embassy in Paris.

Mezzotint with very large margins, proof before letters, rare. 255 x 195mm (10 x 7¾"). SIGNED BY THE ENGRAVER ON REVERSE.
Head and shoulders of a young girl throwing up her hands in pity, set in an oval against a blank frame. The artist Jean Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805), who specialised in domestic genre scenes, signed prints after his designs to prevent undeclared impressions being run off without his knowledge; here, however, only the signature of the engraver, Jean Massard (1740-1822) is visible, albeit faintly.
See BM 2004,0430.9 for published state, 'the only example known of a mezzotint after Greuze made in France'. Ex: Collection of the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd.

Dessiné d'après nature par M.r Douveill et lith.é par Nogues. Lith de Engelmann.]
[Paris: Jules Renouard, 1832.]
Rare lithograph. Sheet 250 x 340mm (9¾ x 13½"), with publisher's blind stamp. Slight staining, bottom right corner snipped.
A Congolese chief outside his hut. A plate from 'Voyage au Congo et dans l'interieur de l'Afrique Equinoxiale', three volumes, by Jean Baptiste Douville (1794-1837). A wealthy traveller, Douville visited Luanda in 1828, before returning to Paris in 1831 and claiming to have explored the African interior. On the strength of his account he was awarded the Société de Géographie's third 'Grande Médaille d'Or des Explorations'. He published this account in 1832 but by the end of the year it was established that his involvement was fiction. After his fiancée killed herself because of the scandal, he left France for Brazil where he was murdered in 1837. Sir Richard Burton maintained that the details in the account were credible, but today it is believed that Douvill's chief sources were unpublished Portuguese manuscripts to which he had ready access.

Stipple, platemark 220 x 135mm (8½ x 5¼"), small margins. Foxing.
Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), French painter, archaeologist and traveller. He had a brilliant career as an artist and diplomat under the ancien regime, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Diderot, Voltaire, and Robespiere. He followed Napoleon on his campaign in Egypt, making over 150 sketches (now in the British Museum) which, reproduced in his book 'Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte' (1802), the first serious description of the antiquities discovered in Egypt, were influential in establishing the Egyptian Revival style in France. In 1802 he was appointed director-general of the Imperial Museums, playing a key role in bringing foreign masterpieces into the Louvre. He played a crucial role as artistic adviser to Napoleon, selecting artworks to requisition and handing out commissions to artists. After Napoleon's defeat in 1815 he retired, and spent his last ten years engraving and working on a general history of the arts.
