Etching, signed by the artist. 180 x 100mm, 7 x 4". Sir John William Ashton (1881-1963). Born in York, emigrated to Australia aged three, but returned to Europe to study art and travelled around Britain, Europe & Egypt 1912-14. His is known to have executed 25 etchings during his stay in Europe. On his return to Australia he became a prolific painter, and Director of the National Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1937. He was knighted in 1960 for his service as Chairman of the Commonwealth Art Advisory Board.
