France, from a set of four allegories on European countries after Hans von Aachen. The series was dedicated to Flemish cartographer Abraham Ortelius. This plate is shows a young woman as Minerva and young man as Mercury, and is an allegory on craft and industry. The composition includes: a painter's easel; weaver's loom; tools and musical instruments (including a lute); tennis racket and balls; woodworking and waving tools; and a gun and lance. In the background a battle scene is on the right, and a banquet and theatrical production on the left.

This plate is shows a young woman as Ceres and young man as Bacchus, and is an allegory on craft and war. The composition includes: tools and weaponry; a copper-plate and two burin needles, and printing press; a small violin (rebec) and a flute with a flute-case at centre; armoury, a gun, a cannon and a clock in lower right corner. In the background an army marches on the right, while peasants drink at a village tavern on the left.

The composition includes: books; viola da gamba; an antique torso, a croquet mallet and balls; a large ball and an arm-guard ('bracciale' used to play an Italian ball game); dice; theatrical masks; a sword, a cornet and shawm. In the background are musicians on the right and an army marching on the left.

A woman holding an orb and sceptre is embraced by a soldier in full armour holding a flag. The composition includes: weapons and navigation instruments; a globe (showing America and the Pacific Ocean); exotic fruits; a pair of compasses; a chest filled with coins; playing-cards; a guitar; an anchor, and a snare drum and trumpet. In the background soldiers playing cards, with a bay populated with ships in the distance.
