He was then quickly drawn more and more to the many possibilities of this artistic medium and by 1926 had completed 331 original etchings. Most of Brangwyn's art concentrated upon figure studies, architectural and marine subjects. 25. Brockhurst, Gerld Leslie [Charles C. Carpenter, Esqr. C.B.E., D.Sc.]
G.L. Brockhurst [signed in pencil].
1931.
Etching. 215 x 300mm.
Gerald Leslie Brockhurst [1890-1978] studied at the Birmingham School of Art and then the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1913, he received the Gold Medal and Traveling Scholarship that enabled him to visit Paris and Italy to study the work of early Italian painters. Brockhurst lived in Ireland from 1915 to 1919 where he was influenced by the simplicity of color and form in the work of Augustus John. Brockhurst then returned to London, holding his first significant exhibition in 1919. Afterward, he turned to etching, most often producing female portraits inspired by his wife. His style at this time was very classical and executed with precise technical accuracy. In 1930, Brockhurst began painting again, using teenage model and future wife, Dorette Woodard as his subject. He became a fashionable portrait painter with famous sitters such as J. Paul Getty, Marlene Dietrich, and the Duchess of Windsor. Brockhurst lived the rest of his life in the United States having settled there in 1939. This large and superbly worked portrait etching was created at the height of Brockhurst's powers as a printmaker. Here the artist has contrasted a magnificently handled portrait of a staid gentlman with the nude sculpture of a woman's torso placed upon the background bookcase [both symbolic of the sitter's private collections]. This dramatic lighting has further enhanced the effect of this impressive work. The wealthy sitter who commissioned this plate was President of the South Metropolitan Gas Company - in his buttonhole he carries the cross of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. A total of 80 proofs were printed, 20 were made available for sale. The fate of the 60 held by the sitter is unknown; however impressions are rarely found.

Charles W. Cain [signed in ink.]
[n.d., c.1920.]
Etching. 210 x 300mm.
The ballad is associated with Lady Keith daughter of the Earl of Kintore married the laiard of Monymush and lived at the castle in the 16th Century. Pitfichie Castle was built in around 1560 by the Hurry or Urrie family. One of their descendant became the famous Major General Sir John Hurry, who was beheaded in Edinburgh after the Civil War. The castle passed between a number of different owners and in 1650 it was sold to the Forbeses, who also owned Monymusk Estate. When the Forbeses sold Monymusk Estate to the Grants in 1712, they moved from Monymusk House to Pitfichie Castle, eventually also selling Pitfichie and its grounds to the Grants. The castle was unroofed in 1796 and as a consequence fell into ruin and was abandoned. It is one of the finesst examples of a 16th Century fortified house of the Aberdeen shire area. Etching 148 x 175mm.
James Henry Dowd [1883 - 1956]. A rather stark image of a black baby girl staring out at the viewer. 'Pickaninny' (also picaninny) is a pidgin word form which may be derived from the Portuguese pequenino ("little"). In the southern United States, it was long used to refer to African American children. This use of the term is believed to have originated with the character of Topsy in Uncle Tom's Cabin. The term was still in some popular use in the US in the 1930s, but has largely fallen out of use and is now considered offensive. Dowd specialised in images of children, and portrayed his subjects in a less sentimental way than some of his contemporaries, such as Eileen Soper. Artist's monogram lower right corner of plate.

Etching. Signed proof, edition limited to 225. 330 x 750mm. Printseller's Association blindstamp lower left.
Robert Gallon [1845 - 1925]was a landscape painter who lived in London. He travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his subjects. His etchings appear loose but actually have defined detail. The silhouetted buildings along the Temple Embankment and busy barges making their way along the Thames are a very good contrast to the companion etching "Tidal Thames" where the wintery sky and snow covered banks show the Thames as a busy river highway. Gallon actively exhibited during the years 1868 - 1903 at the principal London Galleries, particularly the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists.

143. Kasimir, Luigi [London Bridge]
Luigi Kasimir [signed in pencil]
[n.d. c.1920] numbered in pencil 41/150
Coloured etching. 300 x 490mm.
Luigi Kasimir, world-renown Austrian-born etcher and painter, was born in 1881 in Pettau, a part of of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Kasimir attended the Vienna Academy of Art where he studied under William Unger, who introduced him to the technique of the colored etching. Kasimir was among the first to develop the technique of the colored etching. Prior to this, prints were usually handcolored with the color being applied in a casual, haphazard manner. Kasimir first did a sketch--usually in pastel. He then transferred the design on as many as four to six plates, printing one after the other and applying the color on the plate--all done by hand. The finished etching is a true original. Luigi Kasimir died in 1962.
